Snowshoeing

Many ski areas offer snowshoeing. Clearwater Sports on Vermont 100, Waitsfield, 496-2708; and Umiak Outdoor Outfitters, Stowe, 253-2317, give guided tours, including shoe rentals and instruction. Call ahead.

Cross-country

Snowmobiling

Vermont boasts a trail system of more than 6,000 miles, with well-marked trails and access to fuel stops, food, and accommodations. The Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST) and local clubs maintain the trails. www.vtvast.org. •
